Did Your HTTPS Cause a Drop in Search Engine Rankings?

Since Google announced website would get a minor rankings increase if they install HTPPS on their website many web developers sounded the alarms and informed all of their clients.  Of course they didn’t really say a minor rankings increase when alerting their clients and really let their clients think it would be a big rankings increase.

So did your developer or you add HTTPS to your website and instead of a rankings increase you noticed a decrease?  If so, you are not alone.

Search Engine Land did a nice write up on what could go wrong and some possible solutions to your HTPPS SEO issues!  You can read along or you can give us a call and we can get your rankings back on track.

HTTPS post-migration issues

One of the common issues I noticed after a site has migrated to HTTPS is that they do not set the HTTPS site version as the preferred one and still have the HTTP version floating around. Google back in December 2015 said in scenarios like this, they would index the HTTPS by default.

However, the following problems still exist by having two site versions live:

  • Duplicate content
  • Link dilution
  • Waste of search engine crawl budget
